Purpose

This face-to-face residential course is intended to prepare investigative, analytic or operational professionals in policing to use the tools of criminal network analysis in policing of high-harm crimes. It will teach participants how to use criminal network analysis (CNA) for a range of purposes, including:

  • Targeting of criminal networks and their members;

  • Identifying central individuals – key players and brokers;

  • Identifying structural crime patterns, including criminal clustering;

  • Ranking of seriousness with any crime harm index or crime severity scores;

  • Prediction of future criminal behaviour or victimisations;

  • Tracking network activity through intelligence reports;

  • Testing the effects of interventions on networked criminal activity.

Specific Skills

Learners will learn how to leverage on CNA for policing high-harm crimes. They will be introduced to network analysis concepts and thinking, data sources and real-world applications. They will develop hands-on experience using CNA and work on a group project during the course.

Course Structure

The course includes both seminars and practical hands-on exercises using i2. Discussions include key concepts in CNA (e.g., centrality measures, community detection algorithms, data structure). Applications of CNA to a number of different crimes ranging from violence to gangs, human trafficking, people smuggling and terrorism are also discussed. The final day of the course also includes an input and Q&A session with a subject matter expert from i2.

Learning Media

Learning will take place in a Cambridge college lecture hall and side-rooms.

Analytic Materials

Besides lectures and discussion groups, the course provides a variety of readings to expose learners to real-world applications of CNA by various policing agencies and researchers around the globe.
